Daily Outfit

22 April 11

I miss my blue door, but what do you think of my new porch?

I've been wearing this outfit a lot lately, mostly because I'm loving the colour combination of yellow, teal and grey at the moment. It's also one of the few outfits that isn't wrinkled or being washed at the moment. I've had to wash all of my clothes since moving because my old house had a lot of mould in it, so my clothes tended to have that musty smell when I was unpacking them. Of course, the new washing machine broke two days after we moved and it took almost two weeks for men to come in and fix it. I've also realized that almost half of my wardrobe can only be washed by hand, plus there's my garbage bag full of scarves. Vintage isn't just a fashion, it's a commitment to a lifestyle. One of endless mending, washing and ironing.
I ordered this snood from Arthelia's Attic on Etsy and it's fantastic! Naomi makes great quality snoods and mine arrived in a darling parcel. Plus it keeps one's hair up all day (with a couple of bobbie pins) without shifting. Although, I really should have done my hair in victory rolls, my hair just wont let me do that, so I had to make do with my normal rolls.

I embroidered my new to me cardigan using the pattern from Cassie's tutorial. I just love Scottie Dogs and I now want to embroider my clothes more with little vintage designs. Any suggestions?

As you know, I've been capping Woody Allen movies this month. This is the trailer for Manhattan Murder Mystery, which I'm not covering but you'll love if you're in a Nick and Nora mood but want to see how Annie Hall dressed in the 1990's.

Daily Outfit and an Announcement

21 Jan 11

Remember this sweater that I made a couple months ago that was inspired by this movie?
Well, I made another one and this time I added pom pom bracelets around the edge of the cuff ribbing. Yay!
And now for a few announcements.
First: This month's theme for Cinema Tuesdays will be comedies about the Suburbs. And by Suburbs, I mean the post war housing developments populated by nuclear two car families, "Honey, I'm home", secrets, newfangled washing machines, bright colours, bored housewives, kids playing outside, zombies and Doris Day.
I think that the Suburbs theme will nicely compliment the theme I have in mind for March also.
Second: I've finally realized that I have completely run out of room in my closet. I've known that I would run out of room for a couple of months now and my temporary solution of just buying more hangers wont work anymore. So, I've decided to not buy any clothes this month and to assess by wardrobe and to sell the clothes that I don't need/wear that much on Etsy. It also helps that I spent nearly all of January's clothing budget buying up all of the illegal light bulbs I could carry on the bus.
That's a sentence I never thought that I would write.
It will be hard to go thrifting and into vintage stores without buying clothes, which is why I'm going to focus on adding to my collection of novelty brooches, which are very hard to find here.
I do have three exceptions to the "no clothes" rule: the perfect yellow cardigan (surprisingly difficult to find), this coat (which I've been looking for since I stopped growing ten years ago) and of course adding to by collection of vintage fur coats for $50 or under.
On the bright side, I've just realized that I haven't bought any new (as in never-been-worn-before) clothes for two and a half years! I'm not doing that for sustainability reasons, I just want to see how long I can keep it up for.
And if you see any clothes of mine that you would like, you are more then welcome to make me an offer.

"Who's On First" by Bud Abbott and Lou Costello is one of the most brilliant sketches ever written. This is the original radio broadcast of it and it's probably the best rendition of it.

Daily Outfit

29 Nov 10

Remember way back in June when I posted on Ask Any Girl and I said that this sweater would be a brilliant DIY project?
Ta Da!
My sewing and notions store finally put out some new stock after Hallowe'en was over (it's their biggest time since they sell cheap costumes and the like) and they finally got in a huge supply of pom poms. I didn't want to use ones that were as big as the ones in the film, but I think the medium sized ones look pretty awesome. I got the sweater in the summer, it used to look like this, and I just sewed on the pom poms by hand while watching Study in Pink. Do let me know if anyone of you try it.

This week we've been having the normal Vancouver winter of +5 and rain, however last week it was freezing and there was a huge dump of snow. I couldn't even get to my classes one day since the bus got stuck and then the University texted me that classes were being cancelled since the buses were getting stuck. I came home to find that my cat had gotten bored of staring out the cat door and blaming me for the snow and had decided to go on a three day cat nip bender. He's now sobered up and is back to attacking my ankles because I wont make the rain stop. As much as I like snow and wearing fur coats, I do sometimes long for the spring to come and I can stop wearing boots and watch the cherry blossoms bloom. Then I remember that summer usually follows spring and I hate summer. But the thought of warmer weather did remind me of a song which is about one of my favourite springtime activities.
